When you think of very tall people the first thing that will most likely cross your mind are basketball players. Probably some famous center from the NBA, like Shaquille O’Neal, the legendary Shaq.
With his 7′ 1” (2.16 m) height Shaq really is a big guy, but there once was a man so tall he’d make O’Neal seem more like Muggsy Bogues in comparison.
His name is Robert Wadlow, also known as the tallest man in history.
With an officially confirmed height of 8 feet 11.1 inches (2.72 m) he was almost 2 feet (60 cm) taller than the big Shaq and about 3 feet (0.9 m) taller than his own father. Born in the US state of Illinois back in 1918, he suffered from a hyperplasia of his pituitary gland, which caused an extremely high level of growth hormone. Therefore, he was a giant even in his teens, reaching a total weight of 439 pounds (199 kg).
Unfortunately, Wadlow has passed away at the age of 22. His death was caused by an infection on his ankle, with about 5,000 people attending his funeral on July 19, 1940. He was buried in a whopping 10 feet (3 m) long coffin.
Apart from being the world’s tallest man, he was also the proud owner of the biggest feet in the world, with an astonishing size 36.5 foot (UK size 36, Europe size 71). Everything about him was big, and that is exactly the way he will always be remembered.
