There are hundreds of cities in the world with the population of over a million people, but there are only a handful of those that really stand out, with the number of people who work and live there bigger than your average country.

10. New York – 21,500,000
The world famous New York City needs no introduction. We see it everyday in movies, TV series and other media. It is the most populous city in the United States and it draws around 50 million visitors every year.
9. Manila – 21,800,000
Number nine on our list is the capital of the Philippines – Manila. But this number doesn’t include just the City of Manila but a whole capital region of Metro Manila, including Kalookan and Quezon City.
8. Karachi – 22,100,100
Karachi is not the capital, but it is biggest city in Pakistan, is main seaport as well as a financial centre. The city is located in the south of the country, along the coastline meeting the Arabian Sea. Many people in South Asia hurl to this city for higher education.
7. Delhi – 23,500,000
India is the second most populous country in the world with more than 1.2 billion people, so it was only logical that its capital and most populous metropolis – Delhi, would find its way on the list of top 10 biggest cities in the world.
6. Mexico City – 23,500,000
Mexico’s capital takes the number six spot on our list, but it’s actually tied with Delhi, as it is hard to confirm which city is slightly bigger. It is the most important political, cultural, educational and financial center of Mexico. It isn’t a part of any of the 31 Mexican states, but instead belongs to the federation as a whole.
5. Seoul – 25,600,000
Seoul takes the number five position and marks the beginning of the Asian reign in the top 5. Also called Seoul Special City, it is the capital and the biggest metropolis in South Korea. With such a huge population in a not so big of a country, it actually hosts around a half of the nation’s population.
4. Shanghai – 25,800,000
Shanghai is a global city, with influence in commerce, culture, finance, media, fashion, technology, and transport. It is a huge financial center and a home to the busiest container port in the world. It is also a popular tourist destination.
3. Jakarta – 25,800,000
We have another tie, although some reports say that Jakarta’s Metropolitan area is slightly favored in terms of the population number. Anyway, the number three spot on our list goes to Jakarta the capital and largest city of Indonesia.
2. Canton (Guangzhou) – 26,300,000
Canton is the capital and biggest city of the China’s Guangdong province. Included in the population numbers are also Dongguan, Foshan, Jiangmen, Zhongshan, which all make up the area called Northern Pearl River Delta. Don’t let the huge number surprise you, China is the most populous country in the world with over 1.3 billion people.
1. Tokyo – 34,600,000
And finally we are at number one. The current reigning champion and the only city that crosses the 30 million people mark is Japan’s capital – Tokyo. As you might have guessed it, such a high number of people occupying a relatively small space has made Tokyo very densely populated. It is one of the most important cities in terms of the world economy, along with the New York City and London.
